Green Day’s new album

Punk rockers Green Day (from left TRÉ COOL, BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG and MIKE DIRNT) are back with a new album, 21st Century Breakdown. It’s laden with social and political commentary like their previous hit album, American Idiot. Here are 10 things you didn’t know about the new CD.

1 This is their eighth studio album.

2 Finishing it took three years, the longest they’ve worked on an album.

3 They hired Garbage drummer Butch Vig to produce. He’d previously worked his magic on classic rock albums such as Nirvana’s Nevermind and The Smashing Pumpkin’s Siamese Dream.

4 The album follows the life of a couple named Christian and Gloria “as they deal with the mess our 43rd president left behind”, the band says.

5 Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong describes it as “a snapshot of the era in which we live as we question and try to make sense of the selfish manipulation going on around us”.

6 They were influenced by Queen, Bruce Springsteen and The Clash when making the album.

7 Renowned street artist Sixten created the cover of the album from a photograph of a couple kissing at a party in Sweden.

8 After finishing 21st Century Breakdown Armstrong suffered from depression because he thought the songs weren’t ready. “It’s kind of like having post-partum depression.”

9 The music video for the first single, Know Your Enemy, was shot in downtown Los Angeles and shows the band performing at night on a field surrounded by barbed-wire fencing.

10 The video was directed by Matthew Cullen, who steered the production of the video for Weezer’s Pork and Beans.

Music reviews and news

ALBUM OF THE MONTH: SPEED OF LIGHT by Corbin Bleu
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Jared Orlin
The second solo album of High School Musical’s Corbin Bleu (Chad) is an infusion of electropop, rock and R&B. Corbin capitalises on his teen hunk status and the songs, mostly about love, have a teen angst to them. As he’s a Disney star the album - like his image - is squeaky clean. There are no explicit lyrics warning labels and the first single, Moments That Matter, is one of the catchiest R&B tracks we’ve heard.

SCREAM by Chris Cornell
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Alet van Zyl
Chris has gone in a different direction on his third solo album. There are no grungy guitar sounds here and he has said goodbye to the rock sounds we expect from him. Working with Timbaland has seen him move closer to the producer’s signature hip-hop sound. Best songs are Part of Me, Take Me Alive and title track Scream. Rock purists will probably not enjoy it though.

IN A PERFECT WORLD by Keri Hilson
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Gilda van Schalkwyk
After listening to the first few singles Keri released we expected a unique, mindblowing debut album but instead got this average release. She sounds like Beyoncé on a few of the tracks and a carbon copy of Cassie on Alienated. But we love the amazing beats and the production is excellent. Best songs include Turnin’ Me On featuring Lil Wayne, How Does it Feel and Energy.

Willa Holland on our radar

She spent her childhood playing at top director Steven Spielberg’s house and is now famous as devious Kaitlin Cooper in The OC. WILLA HOLLAND has also appeared in a few episodes of the hit TV series Gossip Girl. Here’s the scoop on this rising big-screen star.

- Born Willa Joanna Chance Holland on 18 June 1991 in Los Angeles

- She wanted to be an actress from an early age. “When I was little I used to sit in front of the TV and my mom says I’d point to it and be like, ‘That’s what I want to do’.”

- At seven she was urged to take up acting when she visited Steven Spielberg at his house with her cinematographer dad, Keith Holland.

- She started her career modelling and appearing in small roles. Her big break came at 14 when she landed a spot in The OC.

- Willa plays model Agnes in three episodes of Gossip Girl Season 2. Her character creates all sorts of havoc for poor little Jenny Humphrey.

Movie of the week: The Burning Plain

Drama. With CHARLIZE THERON, Kim Basinger and Jennifer Lawrence. Director: Guillermo Arriaga. 16LVNS. Opens 5 June.
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Leon van Nierop

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
Two married people are having a secret affair in a caravan in the middle of nowhere. After a gas tank explodes their burnt bodies are found. Was it murder?

WHO WILL ENJOY IT?
Charlize Theron fans should immediately get their wallets out and buy a ticket. This blonde bombshell knows how to act! She also produced this intense, dark drama about parents destroying their children’s lives and consciences that burn like fire. Be warned: it’s a complicated script with three separate storylines developing simultaneously before merging, so you’d better pay attention if you want to keep up - but in the end it’s a satisfying watch. And Charlize reveals more than she usually does!

WAIT FOR DVD?
Yes you can, because this is the kind of drama that’s not necessarily better on the big screen. It explores old sins that haunt people for generations until they finally work through them and confess their secrets. It’s also about love and self-punishment. How long can you blame yourself and destroy lives before you start to make peace with yourself? Recommended as an intense, human drama. And Charlize is brilliant.

Pro Evolution Soccer 09
PS3. 2009.
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Ryan Petersen

Pro Evolution Soccer 09 is about as real as it gets without buying soccer kit and running onto the field. The game play is almost too easy but it gives you more time to figure out how you’re going to get the ball into the back of your opponents’ net. This task proves to be infinitely more difficult than controlling your players. With decent graphics and the world’s best players and teams on offer you’ll find yourself wondering how so many hours have passed.

Book of the week: Eclipse

ECLIPSE by Stephenie Meyer (R110, Atom - distributed by Penguin Books SA)
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Jared Orlin

It’s vampires versus werewolves in the third volume of the popular Twilight series about a human girl, Bella Swan, who falls head over heels in love with a vampire boy, Edward Cullen.

There’s a lot more action this time. For starters there’s the vampire army that’s chomping its way through nearby Seattle and seems to be heading Bella’s way, as well as the hostility between Edward and Jacob who are both vying for Bella’s love.

The love triangle that started in the previous book, New Moon, is the central theme of this novel and ends with an accepted proposal and one of the guys being left brokenhearted - but those are the only plot details we’re giving away. The books are getting more soppy though and Bella’s whining will surely grate even the most loyal fans by now. Still if you’ve come this far, you might as well keep on reading.

DEPECHE MODE: Sounds of the Universe
Rating: 5/5
Reviewer: Jared Orlin

It’s a rare feat for a band to notch up hits over three decades but this British synthpop/electronica outfit has done just that. They’re sure to win over new fans with their 12th studio album. The first single, the catchy Wrong, is brilliant and you’ll find yourself tapping your feet to Miles Away and Peace.

THE VERONICAS: Hook Me Up
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Jared Orlin

Twins Jessica and Lisa Origliasso have spawned hit after hit on their second album which has propelled them onto charts all over the world. Their pop/rock sound has occasional touches of electro and reminds you of t.A.T.u., especially Revenge Is Sweeter. There’s also the addictive Hook Me Up and Take Me on the Floor plus some slower, moody stuff. Perfect party music.

MIMS: Guilt
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Gilda van Schalkwyk

This is a pretty decent follow-up from the man who gave us the silly but popular song This Is Why I’m Hot. Apart from the rap there are a few love songs featuring LeToya such as Love Rollercoaster. An altogether good album from the rapper and we hope to see him produce more work of this quality.

DVD of the week: Bride Wars

Comedy. 2009. 86 min. With Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway and Candice Bergen. Director: Gary Winick. PG.
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Lara Atson

Liv (Hudson), a hotshot lawyer, and Emma (Hathaway), a schoolteacher, are best friends. As little girls they dreamt of having their perfect June wedding at New York’s lavish Plaza Hotel. As luck would have it their boyfriends propose within days of each other. The two friends immediately start planning lavish weddings at which they’ll be each other’s maid of honour.

But the claws come out when their wedding planner, Marion St Claire (Bergen), accidently books their weddings on the same day. Someone has to change her plans but who will it be - Emma, who has also been her best friend’s willing doormat, or Liv, who always seems to get her way?

The catfighting is somewhat over the top but the movie has its moments and it’s enjoyable viewing. If you feel like a laugh and the chance to admire a Vera Wang wedding gown it’s definitely worth the watch. It’s a must-have for your chick flick collection! Special features: lots including deleted scenes.

Night at the Museum 2

Picture: Ben Stiller and Amy Adams

One of the most hyped sequels of the year is about to hit our big screens - the adventure-packed comedy Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Here’s a sneak peak of the story and stars before the release

ABOUT THE FILM
If you watched the first movie you will remember zany security guard Larry Daley (played by Ben Stiller) whose world was turned upside down when museum artefacts came to life and took over. In the sequel Larry has left the museum to become a successful businessman and one day gets a distress call from an old friend, miniature cowboy Jedediah Smith (played by wickedly funny Owen Wilson), who says museum baddies are taking over the Smithsonian Institute, a facility with several museums containing about 130 million ancient artefacts. Guess Larry will have to save the day . . . again!

THE CAST
The characters including statues of historical figures that come to life are portrayed by a bunch of hilarious actors:

BEN STILLER AS LARRY DALEY
Where you’ve seen him: Night at the Museum, Zoolander, Tropic Thunder

ROBIN WILLIAMS AS THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Where you’ve seen him: RV, License to Wed, August Rush

OWEN WILSON AS JEDEDIAH SMITH
Where you’ve seen him: You, Me and Dupree, Drillbit Taylor, Marley & Me

AMY ADAMS AS AMELIA EARHART
Where you’ve seen her: Junebug, The Wedding Date, Enchanted

JONAH HILL AS SECURITY GUARD
Where you’ve seen him: Knocked Up, Evan Almighty, Superbad

The film’s star, Ben Stiller, says Amy Adams “invigorated the whole film. In the first one I had to run around on my own - it was quite lonely. So having a relationship this time is great. But she’s made out of wax so there isn’t really a great future for us.”

- Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian hits cinemas countrywide on 22 May.

Hilary Duff: the original Disney queen

She has come a long way since playing high school cutie Lizzie McGuire. HILARY DUFF is all grown up and recently released a compilation album called Best of Hilary Duff which includes the smash hit Reach Out. Here’s why we simply can’t get enough of this talented Tinseltown babe.

SHE’S A GO-GETTER
With a growing fan base from Lizzie McGuire, Hilary went on to star in loads of movies, some making it to blockbuster status. Some of her most popular films include Agent Cody Banks (2003); Cheaper by the Dozen (2003); Material Girls (2006); and last year’s War, Inc.

HER MUSIC MAKES WAVES
Hilary has released four pop albums, starting with her debut, Metamorphosis in 2003. She followed that up with a self-titled album in 2004, Most Wanted in 2005 and Dignity in 2007. This hit-maker has sold more than 13 million records.

SHE’S AN ENTREPRENEUR
Movies and music aside, Hilary also owns a popular clothing line, Stuff by Hilary Duff, turning her estimated earnings into a staggering $15 million (about R135 million).

SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE WANTS
Hilary doesn’t always want to have a hectic schedule in the spotlight and would love to settle down one day. She has been dating hockey player Mike Comrie since 2007.

“I want to have a husband and two kids and a nice little life baking pies. I’m quite romantic. It’s important to have someone make you feel special.”

SHE’S A DO-GOODER!
Hilary is passionate about animal rights and donated 250 000 dollars (about R2,25 million) to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. THE HOME TOUR: LIVE by Louise Carver
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Jared Orlin
Home is the title of a song from Louise’s third album, Saved by the Moonlight, and arguably her most famous song to date. It’s also the name of the live tour she embarked on last year which was recorded for this layered and highly listenable album. It features hauntingly beautiful covers and original songs.

SOUL IN MIND by Lira
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Jared Orlin
It’s easy to see why Afro-jazz songbird Lira is such a crowd-pleaser. Her third album is filled with the uplifting, easy-listening tunes fans have come to expect and love. The SAMA-winning album opens with the melodious Wa Mpaleha which will fire you up. We also loved the title track and the smooth Celebrating Life. The music, like her most famous song, is all about feeling good.

R.O.O.T.S. by Flo Rida
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Sulaiman Philip

Flo Rida has a great ear for what makes a party. You’ve probably already heard Right Round, featuring guest vocals by Kesha. Another track to listen out for is Sugar, with Wynter Gordon. Big names such as Nelly Furtado (on the song Jump) and Akon (Available) don’t add anything spectacular but there’s enough to make the album shine.

Movie of the week: Angels and Demons

Thriller. With TOM HANKS, Ewan McGregor and AYELET ZURER. Director: Ron Howard.
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Leon van Nierop

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
Professor Robert Langdon, who caused so much trouble in The Da Vinci Code, learns the secretive Illuminati are planning to make the entire Vatican disappear - and he’s the only one who can prevent it.

WHO WILL ENJOY IT?
Books by Dan Brown, who wrote The Da Vinci Code, have been read by almost as many people as the Harry Potter series. So if you’re one of those who know more about evil plots being hatched against the Catholic Church than Paris Hilton’s latest squeeze this dark drama will have you nailed to the screen. There are so many plot twists you’ll need all your wits about you to make head or tail of it. If you didn’t read the novel you may get terribly confused but it’s a wonderfully entertaining movie.

WAIT FOR DVD?
No! Go and see it in a theatre so you can join in the conversation. If there’s one movie that will make you forget all your troubles this suspenseful drama in which no one is who he or she seems is just the thing. Horrible secrets are revealed in the most unexpected places.

You won’t be bored for a moment - but you have to wonder what Catholics will have to say about a story in which the Catholic Church is not portrayed in a very positive light. Remember, it’s just a story!

DVD of the week: Australia

Drama. 2009. 166 min. With NICOLE KIDMAN, HUGH JACKMAN and David Wenham. Director: Baz Luhrmann. 13PGV.
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Kim Van Reizig

When her husband dies Sarah Ashley (Kidman) moves from England to Australia to run the cattle ranch she has inherited. Used to a pampered lifestyle she must adjust to a very different environment in the outback - her biggest challenge being the delicious-looking but crass Drover (Jackman). When she learns her cattle are being stolen and the power-hungry Fletcher (Wenham) intends to steal her land she puts together a team to drive her cattle herd across the desert to sell them and save her farm.

Sarah is a free thinker at a time when Aborigines are discriminated against and makes several enemies because of it. Their journey is filled with obstacles and Sarah and Drover both grow through their love and loss in this emotional and, at times, humorous film.

This epic captures the harsh yet beautiful Australian outback and Kidman and Jackman shine on screen - despite the chemistry between them being as dry as the desert itself. Special features: featurettes, deleted scenes, picture gallery.

ELEGY
Drama. 2009. 108 min. With Ben Kingsley, Penélope Cruz and Dennis Hopper. Director: Isabel Coixet. 16SN.
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Ruth Mwakanandi

Professor David Kepesh (Kingsley) habitually has flings with his female students. His adulterous friend (Hopper) is his morally corrupt enabler, always on hand to offer bad advice. But when David embarks on an intimate relationship with the lovely Consuela (Cruz) it’s not just a bit of fun and he becomes obsessed with her.

You’ll either find this movie intriguing and love its frankness, or think it’s self-indulgent and slow. And if you think of Kingsley as Ghandi - the role for which he’s most famous - his character in Elegy, although very well played, may not sit comfortably with you. Yet the idea of a more mature man having an affair with a beautiful younger woman may appeal to older men.

In the studio with aKing

They were in studio for a month working on their latest album - Pressplay peeked into the working diary of aKing (from left Hennie van Halen, Hunter Kennedy, Laudo Liebenberg, and Jaco “Snake” Venter) to find out more about their recording experience. The album, Against All Odds, was due in stores from 11 May.

WEDNESDAY
Our first day at “Camp Crous” (producer Theo Crous’ Bellville Studios in Bellville, Cape Town). So totally awesome! Swimming pool! Big screen! Studio! We booked two extra weeks here so Theo could produce our album. Not entirely sure what that means yet. We’re listening to the tracks today and working on the structures and Theo’s setting up Snake’s kit.

THURSDAY
We’re taking it track by track. Ripping the songs apart and making them listenable. Theo knows a lot - so glad we came here. The album is going to kick ass! Snake’s drum sound is wicked! He recorded Set Ourselves Up today. Definitely a single. Whoo-hoo!

FRIDAY
Not much is going to get done today. We’re playing at the Ramfest later. Structuring some songs and Snake is banging on the kit.

MONDAY
Ramfest was wild. This week we’ll be working on structure, finishing lyrics and laying down the basic drum tracks. Theo is making Snake keep it simple because rock is never complicated.

TUESDAY
Thank Crous for air conditioning! Bellville Studios is just so convenient. It’s right around the corner, fancy name, the list goes on and on. Gotta love it.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY
Writing. Writing. Writing. Doef. Doef. Doef. Lunch! Writing. Writing. Writing, etc.

SUNDAY
Today we used an empty booth to practise with Khayelitsha United Mambaso choir for a show (three tracks we did with them can be downloaded at rhythmonline.co.za). Can’t wait for the CD release.

Get to know Lily Allen

She may be rolling in the dough now but LILY ALLEN’s childhood was a different story. Her mom raised her and her siblings on her own in very difficult circumstances.

“My mother came to London when she was 17 years old with a daughter, a suitcase and nothing else - no money, no education,” Lily (24) says.

Things eased up a bit when her mom became a film producer but Lily became a troubled teen. She reportedly attended 13 schools and was expelled from several for drinking and smoking.

But music saved her. When a teacher overheard her singing one day Lily was encouraged to take voice coaching lessons. She later learnt to play the violin, guitar and trumpet.

She studied horticulture after high school and worked as a florist while trying to get her music career off the ground. Her lucky break came in 2005 when she was signed to Regal Records (Coldplay and Gorillaz) but it was the launch of her MySpace page that saw her career go from strength to strength. So far her page has registered more than 32 million downloads of her songs.

Lily’s first single, Smile, hit radio stations across the globe in 2006 and made her an overnight star. The single reached No 1 on the UK Singles Chart and she was nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award in the category Best Alternative Music Album for her debut album Alright, Still.

In February this year she released her second album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, which includes the popular electropop hit The Fear. “I did a retro thing last time and since I did that a lot of other people did it too. I wanted to separate myself from the group and move forward with this one,” she says.

The album topped charts across the world and its second single, Not Fair, is set to be released this month.

Her biggest musical dream is to work with super-producer Timbaland. “I just want to be happy, keep busy and make some money. I’m happy that I’m able to do that.”

A DIFFERENT ME by Keyshia Cole
Rating: 3/5

As the title suggests Keyshia is desperately trying to be seen as a different musician. We like the fact she’s trying something new but she excels when she’s doing great R&B ballads and hip-hop-infused collaborations. Her third offering is a worthy album but the changes are far too forced. We like the upbeat jazzy sounds of Make Me Over and the sexy Erotic.

THE DUCHESS
Historical drama. 2008. 106 min. With Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes and Charlotte Rampling. Director: Saul Dibb. 13S.
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Alfie Steyn

It’s the late 18th century when Georgiana Spencer (forebear of Princess Diana) weds the Duke of Devonshire. Although it’s considered a good match the marriage is loveless and cruel, particularly after her years-long failure to produce a male heir. Her husband all but ignores her and indulges in many infidelities, including with her best friend.

The public adores Georgiana though and she makes headlines for her political activities and flamboyant fashions (the costumes are great). She’s particularly vocal in her support for idealistic young politician Charles Grey who has been in love with her for years.

The duke’s longed-for son is finally born but this fails to improve the marriage - or have his lover removed from their home. Defiantly Georgiana turns to Charles for love. But her happiness is short-lived as she is forced to make a heartbreaking choice.

The acting is brilliant: the lovely Knightley gives Georgiana depth and sweeps you up in her emotions; and Fiennes is appropriately hateful in his role as the duke. An engrossing film.

WILD WEATHER
Documentary. 2008. 231 min. Presented by Donal MacIntyre. A.
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Murphy Malone

Award-winning investigative journalist MacIntyre anchors a white-knuckle extreme experience to find the worst weather on our planet - including the hottest place: the Sahara desert with a highest recorded temperature of 56 deg C; and the windiest: Mount Washington, US, with the highest recorded wind speed of 325 km/h.

He experiences many of these extremes in simulated conditions - a hurricane in a wind tunnel, extreme cold in a lab where his heart rate and body core temperature are measured. This double-disc doccie divided into Wet, Heat, Cold and Wind is a must-see. Mercifully it’s not too preachy about global warming. Special features: interview with MacIntyre; biography.

Reviewer: Marcus Low

In 2007 Halo 3 broke just about every sales record in the world of videogames. In Halo Wars you return to the same science-fiction universe but instead of running around with guns you devise strategies in the war room. Build futuristic army bases, decide what kind of soldiers or war machines to build, then marshal these forces in spectacularly destructive battles. It might not be as complex as other strategy games but with its slick controls and fast-paced gameplay Halo Wars might be the best yet to land on the Xbox 360.

Welcome back, Wolverine

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE
Sci-fi action. With Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber and Ryan Reynolds. Director: Gavin Hood. 13VL. Opens 29 April.
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Leon van Nierop

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
X-Men character Wolverine is a virile, powerful hero with a past full of aggression and passion. This movie reveals where he comes from, his violent relationship with his brother and his tragic love.

WHO WILL ENJOY IT?
Does the sound of sharp nails on a blackboard make you so excited you have to get your X-Men comic from under your mattress? Do you think Wolverine is the coolest monster of the bunch? Are you crazy about special effects that leave you dizzy, chases that make your head spin and characters larger and more colourful than life? Then you can forgive South African director Gavin Hood for Rendition, his first Hollywood effort. With Wolverine he proves he has what it takes not only to keep full control of an over-the-top action flick but to show the human side of Wolverine. The film tells how he and his brother fell out and how those blades were implanted in his hands and became part of his robot personality.

WAIT FOR DVD?
Wow, this wild, cool movie has enough over-the-top action to make your corn pop itself. The climactic fight on the water towers is better than anything you’ve seen in previous X-Men movies, the balance between monsters and humans is just right and there’s a breather from the action when Wolverine falls in love and reveals his human side - but there’s also breathtaking evidence of his awesome anger. A must-see for X-Men junkies.

Listen to hits by The Rasmus, 3 Doors Down, Korn and 30 Seconds to Mars, this year’s international attractions Panic at the Disco and Oasis as well as a few local hits.

ALL I EVER WANTED by Kelly Clarkson
Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Jared Orlin
Clarkson doesn’t disappoint on her fourth album, which is more rock than pop. She’s a lot like Alanis and Pink with her angry-girl lyrics but in a league of her own. The infectious My Life Would Suck without You is by far the best song but I Do Not Hook Up comes a close second. A few down-tempo ballads add diversity to the 14 tracks.

NKD by NKD
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Jared Orlin
NKD are clearly going in a different direction with their second album. The bold, fresh-sounding pop infused with catchy beats is still there but they’ve added four Afrikaans songs to the mix. Don’t Miss You, fabulously retro Let’s Go and a great cover of Mynie Grové’s Mamma Kom Haal My are songs to look out for. They also do justice to Madonna’s hit Ray of Light.

MOST DOWNLOADED SONG: Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas (iTunes.com)
The first single on the Peas’ new album, The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies), is whizzing up the charts thanks in part to digital sales. Boom Boom Pow was the most downloaded single on iTunes for two weeks in a row and has already sold more than 800 000 copies. It has reached the No 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100 - so expect to hear a lot of the hip-hop/electro track on radio.

Jennifer Freeman on our radar

What’s not to love about Jen! She’s gorgeous, talented and makes us laugh as bratty teen Claire Kyle in the SABC1 sitcom My Wife and Kids. But she’s more than just a TV hottie - she starred in two flicks last year, The Caretaker and Jada - and is one of the gorgeous faces of Neutrogena. Bring it on, Jen!

Born Jennifer Nicole Freeman on 20 October 1985 in Los Angeles. Jennifer (23) was 13 when a talent scout spotted her in a shopping mall and gave her a business card. The rest is history!

She says she’s not much like her character, Claire. “I’m just more laidback than she is.”

You can see Jennifer in films such as Johnson Family Vacation, You Got Served and Mercy Street. In her spare time she enjoys singing, swimming, rollerblading, cooking, dancing and playing basketball. She’s strict about who she dates. “I don’t like pick-up lines and if a guy calls me past 10 o’clock I won’t be answering the phone.”

DVD of the week: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

Rating: 4/5
Reviewer: Willem Moller

If the words “romantic teen comedy” fill you with dread this quirky, original flick will restore your faith.

Nick (Cera), bass player in punk band the Jerk-Offs, is depressed after being dumped by his girlfriend, Tris (Dziena). To cheer him up his bandmates hook him up with eccentric Norah (Dennings). There’s immediate chemistry between them - but it takes an all-night ramble through New York’s underground music scene in search of a secret concert for them to connect. Along the way there’s much mayhem as Norah’s best friend gets hopelessly drunk, Nick plays a disastrous gig and Tris, suddenly jealous, plots to win Nick back.

Wonderful performances, tight direction and an intelligent script make this movie magical from start to finish. Special features: commentaries; video diary; more.

YES MAN
Comedy. 2008. 104 min. With Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel and Terence Stamp. Director: Peyton Reed. PG13.
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Lara Atson

Carl (Carrey) is a loan officer with a negative outlook on life - he says “no” to everything and doesn’t have a social life. Since his wife dumped him for a new love he spends most days alone at home and avoids his friends. One day he bumps into a buddy who persuades him to attend a self-help seminar led by cult leader Terrence Bundley (Stamp) - the “Yes” guru.

Carl is so moved by the seminar he decides to become a Yes Man and he agrees to say yes to every opportunity that comes his way. His luck seems to change after meeting free-spirited Allison (Deschanel), who leads sessions that combine jogging with photography when not singing in her not-so-successful band. But Carl soon finds saying yes to everything has a downside.

The film is a true Carrey laugh fest and way better than his 2005 comedy, Fun with Dick and Jane. It’s fast-paced and enjoyable, especially if you’re a Carrey fan.

Game of the week: Ben 10 Alien Force

PlayStation 2. 2008. 12+
Rating: 3/5
Reviewer: Nadia Sadovsky

Ben 10 Alien Force is undoubtedly the most popular current game for boys in SA. Fans have long been waiting for the game based on Cartoon Network’s hit TV series. Ben is older and his mission is to save Earth. Most exciting are the five new aliens: Swampfire, Jet Ray, Humungousaur, Spidermonkey and Big Chill - all with new superpowers. Sadly the age restriction makes it inaccessible to his biggest fans. And younger ones who play it may find it difficult.
