Alternative hip-hop band Gym Class Heroes’ new album, The Quilt, is out and their trademark socially conscious rap-rock doesn’t disappoint.
BAND
Travis McCoy - lead vocals
Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo - lead guitar
Eric Roberts - bass guitar, backing vocals
Matt McGinley- drums, percussion
The new album is a perfect mix of hip-hop, rock, soul and punk. And it’s no wonder - the guys enlisted the help of producers such as Cool & Dre, The Game, Ja Rule, The-Dream (who penned Rihanna’s smash hit Umbrella) and Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump to work on The Quilt.
The album also features Estelle and Busta Rhymes. “Everything that happened to us in the past couple of years has been a part of this bigger thing so all the experiences we’ve been through with success and everything is a patch in our quilt,” lead singer Travis McCoy explains.
The tracks are a clear indication the band has matured and they’re excited to share the album with the world. “I’m really anxious and curious to see how people are going to receive the record because we definitely put a lot into it. Our last record was a lot more playful; this one is still playful in some points but it’s serious in parts too,” Travis says.
“I’ve always been intrigued by songs that seemed innocent or fun and playful but if you really listen to them there’s a lot more than what you see on the surface.”
And you can expect much more from Gym Class Heroes. “The day we’re satisfied or content with where Gym Class Heroes is, that’s the day we find something else to do,” Travis says. “Right now we’re just as hungry as we were four or five years ago - in fact we’re starving.”
